Flea is a common name for a group of wingless insects which act as external parasites, pierce skin of the host and suck blood. Their usual hosts are mammals and birds. In modern society people love to keep pets so it is very important to be aware of such creatures because they can cause various diseases. So, they must be terminated to avoid serious consequences. There are many effective methods to remove them. First and most commonly used method is the use of flea powder which is applied directly on the animal and it kills the parasite within 15 minutes. This powder should be used for long time because it only kills adult parasite, and is not a remedy against eggs and larvae.
The second method for flea control is the use of flea sprays which are of different types. Most of the sprays are alcohol based which is an active agent to kill the insects. Some sprays also contain insect growth regulator which also destroys all the eggs present and hence are better than other sprays.
There are several herbal insecticides available in the market including citronella, clove and eucalyptus oil. These products must not be applied directly on the animal because they cause irritating sensation and must be applied by mixing with a shampoo or some material flea collar. Their direct application can lead the animal to ingest the insecticide, which may prove to be fatal.
Dichlorvos is present in most of the flea collars and is used on the pets weighing less than 20 pounds. This chemical is volatile and evaporates in the form of vapors. It has minimal use because it is very toxic and can occasionally cause certain reactions especially in Persian cats, in which localized reactions occur around the neck due to its application.
